Light Up Jorden
Light up Jorden
Light Up Jorden is an initiative to involve young people in Aarhus community center Jorden.
Project Brief:
“How might we make children between the ages of 10-16 years act and think in a more socially sustainable way?”
Through a process of research, user consultation and co-creation we developed a two-part plan for Jorden.
Two pilots were run in November 2019 and a recommendation was made to Aarhus Municipality.
Customisable Solar Light
The first part involved an annual “Light Up Jorden” event. A facilitator kit was developed for pedagogues to run workshops for the children to make customized lights. A customizable solar-powered light was developed and the children were encouraged to write their first name and street on their light. This gave them a sense of individuality while being part of the community.
Event Kit
The event kit includes:
- Facilitator workshop guide,
- Event facilitator guide,
- Diagram of event partners,
- Sketches of light inspiration,
- Customisable light templates and lights,
- Reusable event posters, and
- Starter materials for customising lights including waterproof paper, crayons and glue guns.
Sample of Lighting Plan
A lighting plan was developed to extend the hours when the community could use Jorden particularly in the winter months when daylight hours are limited. The lighting types and locations were selected with consideration of how to minimise the impact on the local wildlife and surrounding houses.
Light Up Jorden was designed by Katharine Graha, Lisa Adele Rogersdotter, Sara Brixen and Marie Fani Kremer.
